October 2009 Report:
Have you driven down Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester lately? If you have,
you will have noticed a new visual environment on the Boulevard. All the new trees
have leafed out for their first season, the new landscaping is filling in nicely, and
there are new walkable sidewalks in the Westchester Town Center, new street
lighting, new trash containers and new parallel street parking. This project has been
a collaboration of the Council office, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation
and the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association for nine and one half
years, from design concept through construction.
One project needing to be completed is the installation of the new storm drains at
89th Street and Sepulveda Blvd. to handle the drainage problem that has existed for
years. After that, the street will be resurfaced and striped. We are told this should be
completed before the holidays.
Another project, currently being installed, is the new sidewalk insets. They are
located on both sides of Sepulveda Blvd. between Manchester Ave. and Lincoln
Blvd. Before the construction started on the Boulevard, all Flight Path Walk of
Fame plaques were removed and refinished. The Walk of Fame is sponsored by
the Flight Path Learning Center - Museum Board of Directors. This is an on-going
project that was started in 1995, honoring aviation pioneers, recognizing the
economic importance of aviation and aerospace to Southern California and encouraging youth
to pursue education and careers in aviation-related fields. The plaques are being installed
in turquoise colored concrete, finished with recycled crushed glass of the same color. Along with
these plaques, is a small plaque honoring the donor who funded the inset. The 115
insets will allow this project to continue for many years.
The Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association invites you to take time to
walk down Sepulveda Blvd in the Town Center and enjoy the new environment. |
